The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends yearly pelvic examinations. These visits include an overview of a woman’s overall health, including health and social histories, current medications, vital signs, and current concerns. The exam entails a full body assessment including but not limited to: head, thyroid, heart, lungs, breasts, abdomen, skin, and pelvis. A pap smear and optional cultures are done during the pelvic exam, as well as a bimanual exam to assess the uterus and ovaries. Depending on the patient’s age, additional tests may be considered routine and performed during the visit. The current recommendations for the frequency of pap smears are based on the patient’s age, pap smear history, and risk factors. Feel free to discuss these specific recommendations with one of our providers. During your annual exam, questions or problems can be discussed such as contraceptive options, irregular bleeding, scheduling of mammograms, and STD testing.
